Learn to accept help and live well.

I hope that this post meets you well? Welcome back to our new series called ‘How to live the best life’, although today’s write up will be brief I pray that the few sentences which you read will be inspiring nonetheless.

One thing I’ve come to realise is that a lot of humans [myself included] find it extremely difficult to RECEIVE any kind of assistance. (Beware of such an attitude as this can negatively impact your relationship with God, because instead of casting your burdens before The Lord, you end up trying to sort out life all by yourself). For some pride could be a hinderance to them accepting much needed help, whilst others may not want to ‘burden’ others with their so called problems.

Psalm 55:22 ~ Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

1 Peter 5:7 ~ “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

It can be extremely dangerous for one to refuse help, as this could take a detrimental toll on their health. For example a person who needs immediate medical attention but doesn’t want to ‘bother’ their GP (doctor) because they’ve already seen their doctor twice in 6 months can put themselves in harms way [this is something I’ve rustled with and am dealing with]… Newsflash DOCTORS ARE THERE TO HELP. And yes the health service is inundated with a backlog of workload because of the pandemic, but healthcare workers would much rather you visit them earlier on so that if there are any issues identified they can better handle them.

When reading through the description of Abraham going to rescue his nephew Lot I realised that Abraham had assistance from his allies (acquaintances). I’ve read through Genesis year after year yet I never realised this. This encounter tells me that we ALL need help in life. The bible doesn’t mention that the individuals who assisted Abraham in the rescue were believers (followers of Yahweh [I Am]), and I highly doubt that they were. Yet God STILL used them to help His beloved friend Abraham. God can use anyone, God even has the power to cause our enemies to be at peace with us.

Genesis 14: 16-17 ~ “Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives. After Abram returned from his victory over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

Genesis 14:24 ~ I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.

Yes it is wise for your inner circle to be believers, as the bible states ‘blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly’. But this does not stop or prevent God from using a non Christian to come to your aid.

Psalm 1:1 ~ “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.”

We have Moses as a great example of someone who didn’t refuse help. I can think of 3 occasions where Moses welcomed a helping hand. I believe this must be one of the reasons why the bible describes Moses as a meek man. You have to be humble in order to accept wise counsel (constructive criticism).

1. Moses accepted his father in law’s invitation to stay within the community, and because of this he was able to meet his wife and start a family.

Exodus 2:19-21 ~ “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds,” they answered. “And then he drew water for us and watered our flocks.” “Then where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave him there? Invite him to come and eat with us.” Moses accepted the invitation, and he settled there with him. In time, Reuel gave Moses his daughter Zipporah to be his wife.”

2. Moses also accepted his father in-laws wise counsel even though his wife’s family was not of Hebrew origin (they were culturally different). The advice he received helped alleviate he’s workload.

Genesis 18: 13-24~ “The next day, Moses took his seat to hear the people’s disputes against each other. They waited before him from morning till evening. When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?” Moses replied, “Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God. When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God’s decrees and give them his instructions.” “This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. “You’re going to wear yourself out and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. Now listen to me, and let me give you a word of advice, and may God be with you. You should continue to be the people’s representative before God, bringing their disputes to him. Teach them God’s decrees, and give them his instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten. They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you. If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.” Moses listened to his father-in-law’s advice and followed his suggestions.”

3. Moses in his moment of physical weakness did not deny the help of his brother and fellow Israelite when they came alongside him to hold his aching arms up so that enemy forces would not prevail over them.

Exodus 17:12-13 ~ “Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.”

Remember that EVERYBODY will need help at some point in their life, so don’t ever feel ashamed about receiving a helping hand. Learn to ask for help, trust me it’s one of the best ways you can look after yourself instead of struggling alone! Why struggle carrying multiple shopping bags or moving heavy equipment when there are other people in the room? You’re not a burden, you are a precious human being who God WANTS to help and support. And don’t forget that God can use other humans to help meet your needs. I hope that you could take something away from today’s read, and do join us next week for our talk on FINANCES. Matthew 11:28-30 ~ “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Matthew 6:26 ~ “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?”
