The Importance of Bible Reading

Reading the word of God is also another essential part of the Christian faith. I remember reading a book were the author stated ‘If you want to know how much you love God, ask yourself how much you love His word’. This statement blew me away, as I saw so much truth in it, this is because the bible is formed by words from Gods own mouth. I used to be someone who used to say that I have never heard Gods voice, until one day the Spirit convicted me that when I read the bible that is Gods voice speaking to me.

9929758There are several scriptures which highlight the significance of the word of God. John 1:1 which states ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God’. In verse 14 it goes on to say ‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…’. Also Revelation 19:13 says that ‘He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called the Word of God’. These statements reveal that in His incarnation Christ is the Word made flesh. The Word of God is eternal and carries so much energy and power with it, and is compared to a sword (Hebrews 4:12), which is one of the weapons we use to fight against the kingdom of darkness.

Reading Gods word helps us establish a firm foundation, by helping us grow spiritually. The bible is our spiritual food and what we need to live a healthy Christian life. You can compare the Word of God to physical food. When we do not eat healthily we may suffer from malnutrition. Or if we do not have a balanced diet we may end up developing deficiencies. This is the same when reading the Word of God, if we do not read the bible at all we will live a spiritually defeated life. If we only read a few books from the bible we don’t get a balanced overview of what God wants us to know. The bible thoroughly warns against this in Revelation 22:19 ‘And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll’. We can easily take away from Gods word if we don’t take the time to meditate and study all of the bible not just rereading one book or just the New Testament, which has become a common practise for some people today.

Another reason it is great to read Gods word, is because it means you are less likely to be deceived. There are MANY false prophets around and if you do not know the truth, which is God’s word, you will end up defenceless.  When you read the bible it enables you to  discern the truth of God from the lies of the devil. Unfortunately we can see in this day and age that many people are easily fooled. People are trapped into sleeping with so called ‘men of God’ for healing, or are forced into spending so much money in order to receive God’s blessing. One of the best ways to avoid such situations is to READ YOUR BIBLE!!! Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1). In order to test every spirit you need to know Gods word and be in close fellowship with God, which can be accomplished by prayer.

If you want Jesus to be your firm foundation, you can start of by reading His word. Matthew 7:24 says ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock’. From this scripture we see that God is saying that if we hear His word (which can be achieved by READING the bible) and live by it, we are actually working towards building a great foundation. In the bible Jesus is compared to a rock (Romans 9:33, Isaiah 28:16 and Matthew 21:42) and the best rock to build on is Christ! Even Paul says that Gods Word is able to build you up (Acts 20:32). As you can gather Gods Word is a vital resource in building up a firm foundation for a prolific Christian life.

It is extremely essential to read the Word of God. Sometimes we can find it extremely difficult to read our bible, but it’s always good to start from somewhere. If you do not read your bible at all, you can start by reading one verse a day, that’s an increase of 100%, from reading nothing to something. So take heart, you can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you.
